Chandrayaan-1 gets closer to Moon

The fourth orbit-raising manoeuvre of Chandrayaan-1 was carried out Wednesday which took the lunar spacecraft closer to the moon, the Indian Space Research Organisation said here.

During this operation at 0738 hours, the spacecraft’s 440 Newton liquid engine was fired for about three minutes, the Bangalore-headquartered space agency said in a statement.

“With this, Chandrayaan-1 entered into a more elliptical orbit whose apogee (farthest point to earth) lies at 2,67,000 km while the perigee (nearest point to earth) lies at 465 km. Thus, Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft’s present orbit extends more than half the way to the moon,” ISRO said.

In this orbit, the spacecraft takes about six days to go round the earth once.

The health of the spacecraft is being continuously monitored from the Spacecraft Control Centre at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) here with support from Indian Deep Space Network antennas at Byalalu near here.

ISRO said all systems

on board the spacecraft are performing normally.

One more orbit raising manoeuvre is scheduled to send the spacecraft to the vicinity of the moon at a distance of about 3,84,000 km from the earth, it said.

The Japanese scientists are trying to build a lift that will take passengers 62,000 miles or 99,779 km straight into space. The lift carriages will be powered by the same technology that is used to power their bullet trains to enable them to move up and down would move up and down 22,000 mile-long cables.

The cables are a challenge, they need to be light weight and extremely strong, an answer likely to be found in carbon nano tubes.

Professor Yoshio Aoki, a director of Japan’s Space Elevator Association, professor of precision machinery engineering, Nihon University, Japan, said “The cables would need to be 180 times stronger than steel. It would also need to four times stronger than the strongest carbon nanotube fibre ever produced. Carbon nanotubes are good conductors of electricity, so we are thinking of having a second cable to provide power all along the route.”

Shuichi Ono, chairman of the Japan Space Elevator Association stated that the space ride would be just like travelling abroad and would be available to everyone. With Japans commitment to fund this project swift reactions have come in from other organizations like NASA who claim to have their own space lift projects under way.

An international conference is to be held in Japan in November, aiming to draw up a detailed timetable for the machine’s production. The top end of the lift will be connected to a docked space station, scientists hope that the space ladders carriages would also haul solar-powered generators that could power homes and businesses back on Earth.

The space lift can also be used to remove barrels of nuclear waste by dumping them into space, which I do not think is a good idea, but it would be very interesting to take a ride on a lift that goes to space!

Moon mission launched

Sriharikota, Oct. 22 Chandrayaan-1, the Indian satellite that would take a peek at the moon from close quarters, was carried into space this morning by the PSLV-C11 rocket, amid threats to the launch from a particularly bad weather.

Low, dark clouds capable of striking down the rocket with thunderbolts, loomed menacingly in the morning sky at the Sriharikota range, but a Providential let-up in the inclement conditions made way for the historic launch.

Usually, the rockets form a beautiful spectacle in the sky with their long plume of fire, but today the PSLV-C11 could be seen barely for a couple of seconds before it disappeared into the clouds. The signature growl that rent the air was the only evidence of its brief presence before it bade farewell to the earth.

“We have opened a new chapter in the history of Indian space programme,” Mr G Madhavan Nair, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation, said at a press conference after the launch.

This mission has two key distinctions. First, this is the first time an Indian satellite is going out of earth’s active gravitational field – into an area where its trajectory would be influenced by the pull of the moon, sun and other celestial bodies. While the earth’s gravity would continue to act upon the satellite, it would also be subject to various other pulls. It is a ‘first’ for Indian scientists, one that will reward them richly with learnings for handling objects in deep space.

Second, the satellite is the most complex one ever built (anywhere in the world, says Mr Nair), with 11 instruments for c

arrying out scientific experiments. One of them, bearing the Indian tricolour motif, will crash-land on the moon next month, but not before sending some pictures from near.

Right now the satellite is circling the earth, but over the next two weeks, scientists will keep nudging it into larger orbits until it reaches the moon. Its designated position is a polar orbit around the moon, some 100 km from the lunar surface, where it will remain in service for two years.

The Rs 386-crore project will help Indian scientists study the moon for the mineral composition and any presence of water. Since the Chandrayaan will move up and down the moon as the moon itself rotates sideways, the satellite will have a ringside view of the entire lunar surface, over time. “In two years, we will have the entire map of the moon,” Mr Nair said.

Dear Mr. Bill Gates,

This letter is from Banta Singh from Punjab. We have bought a computer for our home and we found problems, which I want to bring to your notice.

1. After connecting to Internet we planned to open e-mail account and whenever we fill the form in Hotmail in the password column, only ****** appears, but in the rest of the fields whatever we typed appears, but we face this problem only in password field. We checked with hardware vendor Santa Singh and he said that there is no problem in keyboard. Because of this we open the e-mail account with password *****. I request you to check this as we ourselves do not know what the password is.

2. We are unable to enter anything after we click the ’shut down ‘ button.

3. There is a button ’start’ but there is no “stop” button. We request you to check this.

4. We find there is ‘Run’ in the menu. One of my friend clicked ‘run ‘ has ran upto Amritsar! So, we request you to change that to “sit”, so that we can click that by sitting.

5. One doubt is that any ‘re-scooter’ available in system? As I find only ‘re-cycle’, but I own a scooter at my home.

6. There is ‘Find’ button but it is not working properly. My wife lost the door key and we tried a lot for tracing the key with this ‘ find’, but unable to trace. Is it a bug??

7. Every night I am not sleeping as I have to protect my ‘mouse’ from CAT, So I suggest u to provide one DOG to kill that cat.

8. Please confirm when u are going to give me money for winning ‘HEARTS’ (playing cards in games) and when are u coming to my home to collect ur money.

9. My child learnt ‘Microsoft word’ now he wants to learn ‘Microsoft sentence’, so when u will provide that?

Best regards,
Banta Singh
